A Morbid Passion – Launch A Book With Me!

It’s almost time for A Morbid Passion to hit the shelves. I’ll be launching the book at Owl Bookshop in Kentish Town, North London, at 6.30pm on Wednesday 3rd June. If you’re in and around town then you are more than welcome to join – tickets here.

As for the book, it’s November 1930 and the Royal Albert Hall is hosting Lady Malcolm’s Servants’ Ball – a huge fancy dress party for servants. This was a real event and even attracted staff from the Royal household. Two of the guests are 20-something bank clerk Selby Bigge and his aristocratic chum Theo Smythe. They met the previous year and solved a murder together. At the Ball Selby is blown away by how many queer people there are of all classes. As the history shows there were men in dresses, women in suits and people of all genders wearing all sorts. The perfect evening is ruined when a murderer strikes leaving the duo with another case to solve.

At the launch I’ll be reading some extracts from the book and doing a Q&A with the fantastic author/human Eleanor Wasserberg. Then we’ll go to the pub. You’re welcome to join us! A few people have already read the book and written some very nice things about it. Bestselling crime writer Alex Pavesi says he was “hooked from the first page” and another bestselling crime writer Greg Mosse describes it as “an intricate and satisfying puzzle whodunnit written with poise and sensitivity.” It’s an honour to receieve such lovely quotes. A Morbid Passion officially comes out on 23rd June but you’ll be able to bag yourself a copy at Owl Bookshop on June 3rd!

I’ve Been Writing Some Books

Ok, it’s been a fair while since I posted here. December 29th 2024. Oops. Sorry about that. But I can assure you that I have been writing, just not blog posts. I’ve been writing books.

I’ve written about books on this blog before. Agatha Christie’s canon is an absolute favourite and has taught me so much about the art of writing. Shout out to Ursula Le Guin, especially her Earthsea Cycle. I’ve also written a number of sassy reviews of books, films and TV shows. Reading and reviewing stories has been a huge lesson in how to write. It’s helped me hone my craft and find my voice. So, I’ve put all these things together and my first published novel came out last year on June 3rd. It’s called A Queer Case.

In a nutshell it’s Agatha Christie + Queer. That means a traditional whodunnit replete with fancy drawing rooms, red herrings, a fusty old Colonel and a dead body in the billiard room. The queerness comes in the form of the protagonist Selby Bigge. He’s a 25-year-old bank clerk living in London who happens to be very attracted to men. The book’s set in 1929 when it was illegal for men to express their love and sexual desires. Selby has a lot on his plate. He wants to avoid prison for his love affairs and he finds himself near the billiard room where the body’s found. I’m very proud of this novel for a number of reasons, which I may well end up writing about here. However, before I make too many promises I want to let you know that the sequel to A Queer Case will be coming out in June. To be continued…
